UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites

A heritage site to preserve

three_content-img

For years now the Dolomites have been recognised as a World Heritage Site. However, the UNESCO seal is not enough to guarantee their safekeeping.

It is necessary for everyone including tour operators and visitors to play their part in preserving a heritage site that, despite its imposing stature, appears fragile as a result of ongoing changes. Respect, restraint and care are essential elements that must be part of our cultural heritage.

Experiencing the Dolomites goes without saying, but today more than ever appropriate behaviour and a new awareness are required, which must be packed in your rucksack, filled in your drinking bottle and instilled in those who provide accommodation.

Hikes

Walking, hiking and climbing. Pietralba offers plenty of opportunities for those who love exploring forests, meadows and rocky peaks. A network of paths lead to mountain huts, refuges, lakes and via ferrata routes for the more daring amongst us. Latemar, Catinaccio and Sciliar are the most popular choices - just set off and embrace the beauty at your fingertips.

The Rainbow Lake

Lake Carezza is known as one of the most beautiful stretches of water in the Dolomites. The Ladins call it Lec di Ergobando meaning rainbow lake because its colour changes from hour to hour in the sunlight. Located only a few kilometres from Pietralba, it is a must-see for those visiting the area.

The earth pyramids at Collepietra

A short distance from Pietralba is Collepietra, which is home to unusual and fascinating natural monuments known as the earth pyramids. Over the course of thousands of years, geological erosion has given rise to pointed sculptures amidst the fragrant forests of Val d’Ega - a spectacle well worth seeing.

The wild mountain range on the horizon

This is the title of the film on show free of charge 24/7. Starting from the Costalunga Pass, an easy half-hour hike on trail 17 will bring you to the Prati del Latemar mountain cinema. Just stop, take a seat and contemplate one of the wonders of the world, the Catinaccio. Enjoy the film!

Where the snow is whiter than ever

Pietralba is undoubtedly one of the most beloved places in the entire region, and in winter, when snow covers fields and forests to give the sanctuary a magical whiteness, it is even more so. For here it is possible to savor the wonder of the white season far from the chaos that lines the more renowned Dolomite valleys. What's more, the slopes are only a few kilometers away, and those who enjoy walking and snowshoeing have miles of groomed trails at their disposal.
